Part 2 — Battery Care and Charging (Li-Ion) #
Charging Protocol #
- Fully charge the battery before first use — batteries should be fully charged immediately when received and immediately after each use.
- Li-Ion recommended charge time: 4–6 hours. For a complete 100% charge, leave the battery on the charger for one full hour after the charger indicator light turns green.
- Never charge batteries for longer than 24 hours.
- Li-Ion batteries do not have a “memory” — partial discharge/charge cycles will not harm capacity or performance.
- Do not charge the battery indoors. Always turn the power switch to OFF after each use — the five-minute sleep function conserves battery power after inactivity, but leaving the switch ON for long periods without charging may leave the batteries unable to hold a charge.
- Recycle old batteries at a local battery-recycling center — do not throw them in the garbage.
Temperature, Storage, and Range Factors #
- The rated output capacity of a battery is measured at 77°F (25°C). Any variation in temperature alters performance and shortens expected life — high temperatures especially reduce overall battery life and runtime.
- Batteries stored in cold areas (below 50°F / 10°C) will show reduced range.
- Factors that maximize e-bike range: continuous rider pedaling input (as opposed to frequent stopping and starting), flatter terrain, tailwinds, proper tire pressure, lighter rider weight, and a properly maintained, properly charged bicycle and battery.
Part 3 — Component Assembly #
Front Wheel — Quick Release Installation #
- Remove the tension adjusting nut and one of the small springs, then slide the quick release skewer through the hub. For disc brake models, insert the skewer starting on the side with the brake rotor; replace the spring and tension adjusting nut.
- If the bicycle has rim brakes, disengage them to increase the clearance between the tire and brake pads.
- Install the wheel into the dropouts, making sure the quick release lever is on the left side of the bicycle.
- Holding the quick release lever in the OPEN position with one hand, tighten the tension adjusting nut with your other hand until it is finger-tight against the fork dropout, then swing the lever into the CLOSED position.
- Spin the wheel to confirm centering and brake clearance.
Warning: The full force of the cam action is needed to clamp the wheel securely. Holding the nut with one hand and turning the lever like a wing nut is NOT a safe or effective way to close a quick release and will not clamp the wheel safely. Riding with an improperly adjusted quick release can allow the wheel to wobble or fall off, which can cause serious injury or death. Before each ride, check that the wheel is securely clamped.
Pedal Installation #
Look for the letters “R” (right) and “L” (left) stamped on each pedal spindle. Start threading each pedal by hand to avoid stripping the threads, then tighten with a 15 mm narrow open-ended wrench. The right-hand pedal attaches to the chainwheel-side crank arm with a right-hand (clockwise) thread; the left pedal attaches to the other crank arm with a left-hand (counter-clockwise) thread.
Seat Height — Correct Saddle Position #
Set the saddle height according to the rider's leg length for the best pedaling efficiency. While sitting with one pedal at its lowest point and the ball of the foot on the pedal, the knee should be slightly bent; placing the heel on the pedal, the leg should be almost straight. The hips should not rock from side to side when pedaling.
Part 4 — LCD Display, Throttle, and Controls #
The EKX series LCD screen display (Touch ID) indicates speed, mileage, gear, headlight status, and PAS level, and provides fault warnings plus function settings. Controls include the power switch, setting button, gear increase/reduction buttons, electric speed button, F-P light switch, brake levers, and the accelerator.
TAG (Twist and Go) Operation #
- Turn the main power switch on, then begin riding as you would a regular, non-motor-assisted bicycle.
- After a few seconds the motor slowly activates and ramps up to 50% power; with the pedals in motion, slowly twist the throttle toward you to activate full motor power.
- The more you twist, the more motor power is applied — once the throttle is twisted all the way, the motor accelerates to its full speed of about 18–20 mph (28–32 km/h).
Part 5 — Error Code Diagnostics (X22) #
All error codes are uploaded from the controller to the instrument, except for communication errors, which the instrument reports on its own initiative; the instrument is only responsible for displaying them.
| Code | Fault Name | Possible Causes |
|---|---|---|
| E021 | Abnormal Current | Damaged or abnormal controller MOS |
| E022 | Rotor Fault | Throttle (turnbuckle) not returned to position; turnbuckle not connected; turnbuckle damaged |
| E023 | Motor Phase Failure | Motor phase wires not connected properly or connected incorrectly; phase wires shorted to each other |
| E024 | Hall Failure | Damaged motor hall sensor; misconnected or unconnected hall wires |
| E025 | Brake Failure | Brake not returned to position; brake not connected or damaged |
| E030 | Communication Failure | Meter–controller communication harness definition reversed or broken wire; controller and meter protocol mismatch; meter communication circuit burned out |
Part 6 — Maintenance and Torque Values #
With proper care and maintenance, the EKX X22 will provide ease of use and be fun to ride. When working on the bicycle as instructed by this manual, refer to the torque values chart for detailed torque requirements — under- or over-tightened components may loosen or break, causing a fall. Consult a bicycle specialist if you have doubts or concerns about your experience or ability to properly assemble, repair, or maintain the bicycle.
Frequently Asked Questions — EKX X22 #
Does the EKX X22 use the same manual as the X20, X21, and X21 MAX? #
Yes. The X22 is covered by the universal EKX series factory manual, which also covers the GTS, X21, X21 MAX, and X20. Safety checks, battery care, error codes, assembly, and maintenance procedures are common to all models; only the model-specific hardware configurations differ.
What are the exact motor, battery, and speed specs of the EKX X22? #
The factory specification table printed in the universal manual lists the GTS, X21, X21 MAX, and X20 configurations. For the X22's exact motor power, battery capacity, wheel size, top speed, and range, verify the specification label on your bike and your purchase voucher, or contact eBikeDIY support before applying any model-specific value.
What does error code E030 mean on the EKX X22? #
E030 indicates a Communication Failure between the meter and controller. Check the communication harness for reversed wiring definitions or broken wires, confirm the controller and meter protocol match, and inspect the meter communication circuit for burnout.
How long should I charge the EKX X22 battery? #
Charge the Li-Ion battery for the recommended 4–6 hours, plus one extra full hour after the charger indicator turns green for a complete 100% charge. Never exceed 24 hours of continuous charging, and do not charge the battery indoors.
How can I maximize the range of my EKX X22? #
Pedal continuously rather than stopping and starting, ride on smooth and flat terrain, travel with tailwinds where possible, keep tires properly inflated, maintain the bicycle properly, and store and charge the battery in optimal condition — batteries stored below 10°C (50°F) show reduced range.
